Evidence Research

1. Matthew Brady
Brady was one of the worlds first war photographers. His powerful pieces still resonate the truth of how wars impact the world and how fractured life can be.
This image is labelled"Federal Dead on the Field of Battle of First Day, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania" dated back to 1863. Brady has captured powerful images and evidencing the war. He most well know for his portrait work taking photos of Abraham Lincoln and being a successful daguerreotypist.
This is a great image on evidence as this image looks desolate.

2. Robert Capa
Capa's incredible photograph on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France.
Most of Capa's more memorable photography was taken on D-Day, June 6th, 1944.
This photograph is the very core meaning of evidence photography and has helped me understand it better. Evidence photography comes in all different varieties, its documented. Real life evidence.
Capa's famous quote "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough". Inspiring words that have set the bar for many photographers over the years.

3. Dorothea Lange
This famous photograph known as the "Migrant Mother" taken by Dorothea Lange in 1936 is said to be 'the photograph that gave a face to the great depression'.
This is a great example of evidence photography as it has all the characteristics and emotions yet if you look at all the photographs Lange had taken then it shows how played the photograph is as it was part of a series of photo's she had taken of Thompson and her boys. Although at the time this image caused an immediate public outcry, quickly prompting politicos from the federal resettlement administration to send food and supplies. no one knew the identity of the photographed woman until Thompson revealed herself years later in a 1976 newspaper article. This shows how effective and real evidence photography can be and I would really like to create a photo that has all them qualities. It is a documentary style of photography.

4. Eddie Adams
Known as the 'photograph that ended a war but ruined a life', Adams took this photograph named "Murder of a Vietcong by Saigon Police Chief" back in 1968.
This documentary photo won Adams a Pulitzer Prize in 1969.
Evidence photography can be the most powerful and hard hitting type.
I really like the meaningful and inspiring photo's however this is a very dark and disturbing image to look at it is still a strong meaningful piece of documentary photography and I would like to create these effects in my work.

Research part 2: Reflections and light

Reflections and light

Although the photographer is unknown the image is a great example of both light and reflection. This image has been cleverly thought out and I want to use this style in my forensics piece where I will be using a 500Watt light bulb. I will be focusing it more on the reflection on the glass revealing whats behind me. The sunset helps and complements the image with nice colour tones.

Research

      John Smith

John Smith is currently employed as Senior Lecturer in Photography & Digital Imaging at the University of Westminster, John is one of the UK’s leading experts in the area of forensic imaging, with over ten years of experience working for the major forensic science providers: first with the Serious Crime Unit of the Forensic Science Service (London laboratory) and then with Forensic Alliance and latterly LGC Forensics (Culham).

Although there aren't any photos that John has taken on the internet due to the line of work he is and has been in. John used to take serious crime photos which would be guarded by privacy laws and genuinely quite unpleasant and inappropriate for viewing.

Image Research and Annotation

I like this photos perspective, the image doesn't come on too heavy with the crime/incident.
The photo does seem staged as the photo is focusing more on the photographer but it gives us a clear look on the kind of clothing and equipment   used in the real scenarios.

This image is more along the lines of what I would like to portray in my photos such as the use of the yellow markers and evidence.
In my photos I will use a variety of locations which I have already planned out.
I will use rural, urban and derelict/rundown areas.
This is such a simple image whereas when I shoot mine I will make sure they have a backdrop location which provides the realness and situation of the image.

This hard hitting real image was taken by Gilles/Magnum in Rwanda.
Captioned:Clothing and bleached bones were all that remained of this refugee, slain with over 1000 others at the parish church of Nyarubuye, Rwanda. Their bodies were not found until 44 days after the killings.
A graphic and intense piece to look at but a true one. Discarding all the dark facts of this image the way the clothes and body is laid out has helped also and will encourage me to use more materials.
